A Pirate's Life

This is how weird my stream of consciousness thinking can be. Today is national talk like a pirate day, so my immediate thought was the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland. I didn't think about the movies or Johnny Depp, but I went straight to the original inspiration of the ride. I happen to love the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and Disneyland in general.

The first time I went to Disney I was out in California visiting my brother and happened to be 22 years old at the time. Needless to say I didn't expect to really enjoy the place. As much as it may take a jab at my pride to admit, Disneyland is a magical place for any age. Yeah, I said it. Sure, I have had loads of fun at other amusement parks with my family and friends, ridden big thrill rides and maybe had a funnel cake. But there is a totally different vibe at Disneyland. You don't mind waiting 30 minutes to ride Mr. Toads Wild Ride with your brother, or care about paying 5 bucks for a delicious churro. Don't get me wrong, I don't plan on buying a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt soon, or even traveling to Orlando to see Disney World, but I like Disneyland.

My favorite ride aside from the Pirates of the Caribbean is the Haunted Mansion. even though the Haunted Mansion tends to break down while you are on it because "the spirits are messing with the mechanics". I want to hear from other people who aren't scared to admit that they love Disneyland. What are your favorite rides?

Having been to both Disneyland and Disneyworld I have to say they are both a lot of fun. The rides majority of the rides aren’t necessarily “thrill rides” but the atmosphere they create is so inviting that I have trouble not having a good time even on the cardboard-cut-out-blacklight-rides like Alice in Wonderland. Obviously you are going to run into assholes as you will everywhere in the world but for some reason it never bothers me out there. I love going to the different sections with their individual themes, e.g., Tomorrowland, New Orleans Square, Main Street, etc. If I have to choose one ride out of all of them I would go with the Matterhorn. Hard to beat a nice coaster through a mountain with mechanical yetis. “Was I going to fast un mine toboggan?”
However, I would also like to call attention to what I consider to be the sleeper hit of Disneyland, “Gadget's Go Coaster” back in Toontown. It’s a coaster designed for younger kids and it only lasts around 30 seconds (if not shorter) but I always have a smile on my face by the time it is over.

I agree with John there is something about the crazy little coaster in Toontown that is just plain fun. What I like best about Disneyland is going with the family and enjoying it together. Seeing it through other people's eyes creates a warm feeling that is hard to beat. My favorite has always been Pirates of the Caribean also especially since they have jazzed it up a bit. But I also like the Indiana Jones ride and the crazy parade. I have always loved parades. I had never been to Disneyland until I was in my fifties but that hasn't made the magic of the place any less intense.
