Denmark Weather

Finally the fall weather is starting to creep into Missouri. The highs during the days are in the low 70's and at night with the windows open a cool breeze makes sleeping with a warm comforter necessary. I love this weather. This is exactly how the weather was when i visited the tiny island of Bornholm in Denmark one spring while in college.

I had never traveled abroad before and honestly was a bit ill prepared. I imagined, as well as most of my trip mates, that since we were traveling to an island during the spring the weather would be pleasantly warm. Of course we were all wrong. The air was crisp and although the sun came up at 3:00 am every morning and went down at 10:00 pm every night the chill of winter still blew through the Baltic sea winds. I made due with the sweaters and jeans I had brought. Even doubling up on the layers on those nights I waited until midnight and rode my rented World War II era bicycle to town to use the pay phone.

This weather brings it all back for me. All of those wonderful moments of feeling so alive with possibility I thought I was going to burst. Riding bikes along the coastline of fine sand, drinking beer as dark and rich as cream soda, standing under the deafening noise of a wind turbine. This is the time of new beginnings for me. Fall and this weather reminds me of how little I know of the world and of myself. I am ready to wander, and so thankful for all the places I have been that inspire me to keep going.

Fall has always been my favorite season. There is that sense of promise in the air with the brisk feel and smell of everything associated with Fall. I remember being in mid-missouri at a football game on a fall evening with the marching band and the yelling crowd. Nothing quite tops that feeling. That may have been one of my most memorable times of my life when you and John were in Marching Band and we traveled to festivals and went to football games. Here in California even though the weather is not as cool at night it still some how has that promise of Fall. Sometimes I mees the fall color that we had in the Midwest but there is something to be said for the ocean and sand on abright fall day. There are still flowers and palm trees rather than the oaks and hickorys but they are still beautiful and you can still hear the sounds of a football game at the local high school.

My favorite memory of your Denmark Trip was calling your hotel and trying to speak very slowly to the operator so that she would understand my English. Of course, she spoke perfect English and would then turn around and talk very slowly in English back to me, as if to be sure I understood what she was saying. I have never laughed so hard at being insulted in my life. Us silly naïve Americans and our one language.
P.S. Fall rocks. I’m getting plenty of seat time on the motorbike. Cant say zipping along a Ozark country road comes close to bike riding in the land of the Vikings but it will have to do until I can carve a long boat out of one of the trees around here and hit the open seas.
