I really loathe Sundays. I am always restless in knowing that the next five consecutive days will be devoted to my day job. I try to read, to write, maybe do a little shopping, but that impending doom is always there tapping me on the shoulder so I couldn’t possibly forget that this is my last day of freedom for the week. For me it is like being a kid and dealing with the last day of summer break. I know this is a horrible attitude to have and in fact I am just wasting my day off worrying. So, let’s just say I am working on the very root of the problem.

My favorite state is on fire. Ecologically, forest fires are good for clearing underbrush and enriching the soil, but I can't help but feel a sense of sadness for everything else that is lost. The first time I visited Montana I was 13, and upon reaching the northwestern half of the state I knew that I had found a place unlike any other I had been before. That sounds vague I know. The latest issue of Travel and Leisure came in the mail today with a teaser on the cover for great fall trips. Inside the magazine the fall trips are all about the New England area, and their wine tours, antiques, fall foliage. I have yet to experience a New England fall and I am sure it is something phenomenal, but to be honest I have driven through several states during the fall and been floored by the beauty of the changing trees. Wisconsin with its unsuspecting hills suddenly shaped by fiery color offset by the lush green of grass fields. Even Missouri comes in and charms us with tree filled river valleys making us forget the heat and humidity that made us curse her all summer long. Needless to say the fall is a wonderful time of year for many pockets of the country and this means fall travel to wine festivals, autumn harvest and numerous other events.

The not so far flung traveler

Most of the travel I have done in my life has been by car. My childhood was spent taking road trips in the summer with my parents and two older brothers and camping in a "pop up" camper. The places we visited were historical sites and national parks, which can mostly be contributed to the fact that my father was a history teacher and my mother had grown up traveling in the same way. These vacations are some of the most vivid memories I have of my childhood. I recall waking up early and hitting the road at dawn. Within a day I could be running up mountain trails in Colorado or splashing in a river in Tennessee. I can directly attribute my love of travel to these early trips. I would look forward to these trips all school year and as the time approached even highlight maps and pick out campground from hefty directories.
